Save the Date: September 29th – 3rd Annual LWOP Walk for Life

Felony Murder Elimination Project invites our advocates and supporters to save the date for the 3rd Annual LWOP Walk for Life Walk-a-Thon: Walk for Healing & Hope – A Day of Remembrance on Tuesday, September 29 at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

From September 26 to October 3, incarcerated communities on prison yards across California will be participating in a powerful week of walks. The week of action will culminate in a statewide gathering at the Capitol on September 29, where families, advocates, organizers, and community members will come together to honor loved ones, uplift healing, and call for meaningful change.

It is long past time to abolish extreme sentences like Life Without Par, ole (LWOP) as they deny the core human capacity for rehabilitation, ignore data showing most people age out of crime, and waste billions of taxpayer dollars to warehouse aging individuals who statistically pose little to no threat to their communities. The vast majority of criminal activity occurs before age 40. Extreme sentences have led to a surge in elderly, medically fragile incarcerated individuals whose ongoing care poses immense financial burdens on state budgets.

Additionally, people change over decades. LWOP sentences treat individuals as irredeemable, ignoring personal growth and successful reintegration, which often results in recidivism rates of less than 5% for those eventually released. Moreover, criminological research shows that long sentences do not deter crime better than moderate ones. The threat of extreme penalties carries little weight for impulsive actions.

The United States remains the only country in the world that sentences youth to life without the possibility of parole. Progressive criminal justice reform organizations and advocates are more frequently introducing legislation in accordance with the “second look” movement, advocating for parole eligibility after 10 to 20 years to re-evaluate whether continued incarceration remains necessary or just.

The LWOP Walk for Life Walk-a-Thon is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with people serving LWOP and other extreme sentences, and with the families and communities most impacted by incarceration.
