Inaugural National Life Without Parole Awareness Day Set for October 24, 2026

CAMBRIDGE, MA (Oct. 5, 2026) – A coalition of advocates, directly impacted individuals, and community leaders, led by Drop LWOP New England has announced the inaugural National Life Without Parole (LWOP) Awareness Day, set for Saturday, October 24, 2026.

The nationwide public education effort aims to introduce everyday Americans to the stark realities of life without parole sentences. At the heart of the initiative is a simple question: Did you know what “life without parole” really means? For many Americans, life without parole sounds like a standard lengthy prison sentence. In reality, it means a person will spend the rest of their natural life incarcerated. It is, in practical terms, death by incarceration.

“Most Americans are completely unaware that tens of thousands of people in this country have changed their lives entirely, yet have zero opportunity to ever demonstrate that growth to a parole board,” said Dr. Brashani Reece, Executive Director of Drop LWOP New England. “A life without hope undermines the entire purported purpose of the criminal justice system, namely that of ‘rehabilitation.’”

“True accountability isn’t just serving time; it’s spending decades doing the painful, necessary work to transform who you are. We’re launching this day because Americans deserve to know what death by incarceration really looks like and why restoring the right to hope matters.” – Steven Quinlan, Co-Founder of Drop LWOP New England and a person serving an LWOP sentence.

Drop LWOP New England and its partners are inviting universities, faith communities, civic groups, and community members across the country to participate virtually the week leading up to and on October 24, 2026.
