Approximately two million individuals are currently incarcerated in the United States. Each of these people has a family, which extends the impact of incarceration to millions of family members across the country.

Getting support when a loved one is incarcerated is vital for managing the significant emotional, financial, and logistical burdens that fall on families. Research indicates that in the United States, nearly 1 in 2 adults, approximately 113 million people, has had an immediate family member, such as a parent, child, spouse, or sibling, incarcerated in jail or prison at some point in their lives, amplifying a widespread but often hidden need for community-based aid.

Additionally, the impact of incarceration is felt long after incarceration periods have ended, as even shorter imprisonment stays have been highly impactful to families, as ongoing consequences of incarceration are experienced by the incarcerated individual and their connected families. Negative outcomes include increased levels of isolation and loneliness, as well as familial incarceration leading to the dissolution of marriages and the fracturing of families, as incarceration is seen to increase divorce rates. Barriers due to incarceration affect families and the surrounding community, which includes extended family members and caretakers for children often being left behind. Stigma is a particularly damaging social barrier as it leads to the loss of relationships, an important element due to the vital service a family support network provides to incarcerated impacted families.
